At Southwest Schools Middle and High School Campus, we provide a free, high-quality and rigorous 6th-12th grade education to approximately four hundred Houston children. Maintaining our small school environment allows us to be responsive to each of our student’s unique needs. Highly-qualified staff members are committed to the academic and interpersonal success of every single student. Our classrooms offer the latest SMART Board technology and access to a variety of additional electronic resources such as iPads, Kindles and laptops. Periodically, we hold a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ day to instruct students on internet safety and introduce them to the many helpful applications they can access at home. Teachers enrich core-area instruction with interactive, hands-on activities and engaging, performance-based learning experiences. After-school and Saturday tutorials are also available when needed. We offer a CASE grant-funded after-school program that provides out-of-school time services including homework help, exercise, fine arts and career education. In 2014 the Texas Education Agency awarded our school Distinction Designation for outstanding performance in the areas of Reading/Language Arts and Science.
Maintaining our students’ health is a primary goal, so participation in physical education and other nutrition and wellness activities occurs regularly. Our students participate in the National School Lunch Program which offers a nutritious free or reduced-rate breakfast and lunch for qualifying students. We are grateful for the support of the Houston Food Bank which delivers hot meals for all students who participate in the after-school or tutorial programs. The Food Bank’s ‘Backpack Buddy’ program also provides weekend food for needy families.
